EXECUTIVE THESIS

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation already limits what brands can do with unsold clothes. Product rules and a digital passport for textiles come next.

Editorially structured from the original publication.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The report in brief.

Since 19 July 2026 large companies may no longer destroy unsold apparel, clothing accessories and footwear in the EU, under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781. Medium-sized companies follow on 19 July 2030. Companies that still discard unsold consumer products must publish what they discarded and why. The Commission’s ESPR working plan schedules ecodesign requirements for textiles and apparel for 2027. They are expected to cover durability, recycled content and substances, and to bring a digital product passport that carries product data along the value chain. For a Turkish garment or textile supplier the effects arrive through the brand. Buyers who can no longer destroy overstock will order closer to demand and push for smaller, faster runs. Buyers who will need a product passport will ask for fibre, origin, processing and chemical data per model. The suppliers who can give that data cleanly will be easier to keep.
